BUILDING STUDENT CONFIDENCE

Publication is important for student's resume. Please take time to help your students get published in Ke'lab and build confidence in their work!
The college's literary and visual arts publication is a showcase of the creative talent of our college community and a showpiece for the college. It is a great way to show off the excellent work being produced in your classes. It is a professional publication that is also part of our applied learning courses at the college. The college invests in the publication yearly to ensure it benefits our students and can be used for marketing.

ADD KELAB TO YOUR CLASS:

Before Fall or Spring Semester:
  • Read about Kelab-orations and consider adding them to your curriculum to increase concept development in your courses and connect students in the Creative Careers Guided Pathway!
  • Add Ke'lab submissions as an assignment for the end of the Fall semester and/or the beginning of the Spring semester. Check out our suggestions below in the Assignment Ideas section.
  • Review the submission pages for Art and/or Writing so you are familiar with them. Guide students to reading instructions carefully.
  • Art Faculty review the Art Submission Tips.
  • Review the Faculty Information below for how to have students submit in classes.

End of Fall Semester:
  • Reward students for submitting work by offering them some credit. Have them screenshot their submission Thank you page for proof.
  • Remind students how important publishing their creative work is and how it can benefit them after college.
  • Help students curate their work and guide them in submitting ONLY their best work.
  • Teach them the importance of following directions when submitting to a professional publication.
  • Refer them to our art tutor or tutor center if they need additional help.

Beginning of Spring Semester: Deadline for Submission is 2/10/2023
  • Create a week 1 or 2 icebreaker and have students review their work from last semester and personal work. Have them submit their best work. Do a critique as a class.

ASSIGNMENT IDEAS

ART FACULTY ASSIGNMENT IDEAS:
  • Feel free to use Ke'lab submission writings to incorporate into an art assignment. Contact us by email to request available writing at the beginning of each semester [email protected].
  • Almost any assignment that is concept based can be changed to incorporate a Ke'lab writing as the concept. You do not need to create an entirely new assignment.
For example in students enrolled in Typography were provided Ke'lab writings to choose from. They chose a writing to create a calligraphy poster in response to. Students used a line from the Ke'lab text they have chosen for their poster. Student's utilized typographic styles, colors, etc. that convey key concepts from the writing. Formerly students chose a famous quote for this assignment. Switching the concept of the assignment was easy.
  • Any assignment can be altered to incorporate creating imagery in response to writing.
  • There are poems, fiction, creative non-fiction, and scripts available for students to choose from. It is best to allow students to choose their piece of writing rather than assigning one piece of writing to the whole class. Allowing students to choose increases the chance of publication, as often only one or two works can be paired with any piece of writing.

CREATIVE WRITING FACULTY ASSIGNMENT IDEAS:
  • For writing faculty artwork can provide writers with a prompt for their piece. There are many artworks to choose from, the most abundant art mediums are drawing, painting, and photography. Contact us by email at the beginning of the semester to request them [email protected].

COURSE SUBMISSION INFORMATION

It is always preferable to have students go through the steps of submitting their own work. This is an educational activity. However, we realize sometimes this isn't possible. Removing barriers to get student work submitted is sometimes the best decision, but you do need to ensure each student has given permission for you to submit their work.

Concurrent enrollment high school faculty
, if submitting as a class due to limited internet/computer access you can create a zip file of work and include a text file with:
  • full student names as they would like to see them printed
  • filenames that correspond to student names
  • student emails (school and personal)
  • student addresses
  • artwork mediums
  • title of the writing that inspired the works or Kelab-oration information (optional)

College campus faculty, please encourage students read the online entry form carefully when they submit work. It is important to their professional education.
  • ALL students must submit through the online form.
  • Aid students in photographing their work professionally, see the Art Requirements page for help
Non Pandemic Semesters only:
  • Students submitting work to Kelab for digitizing need to take a photograph their submitted physical piece with their mobile device to complete the online entry. This allows Kelab staff to match their online submission with their physical works dropped off for digitizing. This is an important organizational step for the Ke'lab staff.
  • Laptop computers are available with laptop cameras to support studio art course submissions on campus. Students can use their phones as well.
  • College campus studio art faculty can drop off student work for digitizing in room 141 or with our art tutor. Works will be digitized by Ke'lab student staff during the Spring semester. Students can also get help digitizing their own work from our art tutor.
  • All physical works dropped off for digitizing need a clear name written on them in ink.
